On Wednesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of carrying out drone strikes that targeted a Greek-owned oil tanker off the Black Sea the previous day, marking the latest in a series of maritime assaults in the area.
On Tuesday, Greek officials reported that drones hit two oil tankers belonging to Greek interests, the Matilda and the Delta Harmony, with one scheduled to load Kazakh oil near the Russian shoreline.
In their statement, the Russian Defense Ministry indicated that the Maltese-flagged tanker Matilda was struck by two Ukrainian drones approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) off the coast near Anapa, located in southern Krasnodar.
The statement from the ministry did not refer to the Delta Harmony, and Ukraine has yet to respond to the accusation.
Over the past year, Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy facilities and logistical centers with drone attacks, which it describes as warranted retaliation against Russia’s full-scale invasion and ongoing control of Ukrainian land.
Kazakhstan and Greece both expressed their condemnation of the attack in separate statements on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry expressed “serious concern” regarding the strikes “against three tankers headed to the marine terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in the Black Sea.”
“The rising frequency of such incidents underscores the escalating risks to the operation of international energy infrastructure,” the ministry noted.
