The previous governor of the central Ryazan region has been accused of accepting bribes amounting to millions of rubles, as reported by the head of Russia’s Investigative Committee through state media on Wednesday.
Nikolai Lyubimov, a notable figure in the ruling United Russia party, held the position of governor from 2017 until 2022. Following his governorship, he was appointed as a senator representing the Ryazan region in the Federation Council, the upper chamber of the Russian parliament.
Lyubimov resigned from the senatorial role in December 2024, just prior to a Moscow court placing him in pre-trial detention on corruption charges.
The specific allegations against Lyubimov were disclosed for the first time on Wednesday, when Investigative Committee leader Alexander Bastrykin announced that he is accused of receiving a bribe of 252 million rubles (approximately $3.2 million) in return for facilitating a deputy gubernatorial position and providing “general patronage” during his tenure.
Bastrykin also indicated that separate bribes of 12 million and 8 million rubles were paid to Lyubimov for help in obtaining state contracts for the supply of medical equipment, as reported by the state-operated news agency TASS.
If found guilty of the charges, Lyubimov could face a prison sentence of up to 15 years. It remains unclear whether he has entered a plea of guilty.
