The incident unfolded around 8:40 p.m. in the Amtrak rotunda beneath Madison Square Garden, a bustling area near West 31st Street and Seventh Avenue.[1] The 37-year-old victim lay asleep on the floor when the group approached. One man lit the victim’s clothes, sparking a small blaze while the others stood by watching.[3]
First responders arrived quickly, extinguished the flames, and rushed the man to a nearby hospital. Police confirmed the attack appeared random, with no prior interaction between the victim and suspects.[4] Commuters in the transit hub, one of the world’s busiest, witnessed the chaos but no immediate intervention occurred before authorities intervened.
Victim Rushed to Burn Unit in Stable Condition
Medical teams transported the victim to Weill Cornell Medical Center or NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s burn unit, depending on reports.[2][1] He sustained second-degree burns to his arm and back. Authorities described the injuries as non-life-threatening, and he remained in stable condition following treatment.
