Campaign season in Nevada has brought the usual flood of television ads, mailers and social media posts. Candidates trade accusations and promises while voters sort through the noise. One topic remains largely absent from the conversation: the rapid expansion of data centers across the state.
Expansion Pressures Mount in a Dry State
Nevada already hosts several large data center projects, with more under development in both urban and rural areas. These facilities require substantial amounts of electricity and water to operate cooling systems. The state’s major utility has publicly stated it lacks sufficient capacity to meet the projected demand from projects now moving forward.
Rural electric cooperatives continue to receive proposals from developers promising jobs and tax revenue. Local officials in some communities have approved incentives, including millions of dollars in tax abatements. Questions persist about whether developers have fully disclosed the scale of those breaks or the long-term resource demands.
